What is a Post-16 Trainer?

A trainer (or tutor) in post-16 education teaches young people and adults after they’ve left school. This includes learners on college courses, apprenticeships, or adult training programmes. You don’t need to be a school teacher - you can train others in the subjects or skills you already know well.

Trainers help learners gain new skills, qualifications, and confidence. Key responsibilities include:

Planning Lessons: Creating engaging learning activities.
Delivering Training: Teaching face-to-face or online.
Supporting Learners: Helping people with different needs and backgrounds.
Assessing Progress: Checking learners understand the subject.
Creating a Safe Environment: Encouraging respect, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Qualifications are required, but there are different routes depending on your experience and goals.

Subject Knowledge or Experience

You’ll usually need experience or qualifications in the subject you want to teach (for example, childcare, health and social care, construction, business, etc.).

Teaching Qualification

You’ll also need a recognised teaching or training qualification. The most common route is:

• Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) – A great starting point
• Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) – For those delivering regular training
• Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) – A full teaching qualification, ideal for long-term careers in FE
