TQUK Level 4 Award in Observation of Teaching, Training and Learning (RQF)

This course is ideal for those involved in quality assurance, coaching, or professional development across further education, adult learning, independent training, or work-based learning settings.

This qualification is ideal for:

• Teachers or trainers who observe others’ practice
• Advanced practitioners or quality champions
• Internal quality assurers (IQAs) and assessors
• New or aspiring coaching and mentoring staff
• Those preparing for curriculum or quality roles

To enrol on this course, learners should:

• Be aged 19 or over
• Be a qualified and experienced teacher or trainer
• Have a good level of written and spoken English (e.g., GCSE Grade C or above)
• Be familiar with lesson planning, delivery, and assessment
• Understand differentiation, learning management, and inclusive practice

The course is structured around two in-depth units:

1. Observation of Teaching, Training and Learning

• Principles of professional, objective, and evidence-based observation
• Preparing for observations, including documentation and protocols
• Identifying good and excellent teaching
• Gathering and recording evidence
• Making and validating observation judgements

2. Feedback after an Observation of Teaching, Training and Learning

• Understanding the purpose and psychology of feedback
• Structuring and delivering feedback clearly and respectfully
• Evaluating observation evidence
• Managing responses and professional dialogue
• Reflecting on and improving own observation practice

What You’ll Learn

• How to plan and conduct effective lesson observations
• How to make structured, evidence-based judgements
• How to deliver meaningful, constructive feedback
• How to support teaching staff through coaching and development
• How to evaluate and improve your own observation performance

This qualification supports roles such as:

• Teaching and Learning Coach or Advanced Practitioner
• Internal Quality Assurer (IQA)
• Observation and Feedback Lead
• Quality Improvement Coordinator
• Curriculum Team Leader or Middle Manager

After completing this qualification, learners may:

• Progress to the TQUK Level 5 Certificate or Award in Observation of Teaching and Learning
• Study the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
• Move into quality assurance or CPD leadership roles
• Train others in observation and feedback practice

As part of your course, you will receive a 1-2-1 induction session with your tutor via Microsoft Teams. This session is designed to help you get started, set clear goals, and ensure you have the right support in place for a successful learning experience.

• Individual Learning Plan (ILP) Creation – Your tutor will work with you to develop a personalised learning plan, outlining key milestones and ensuring your studies align with your goals.

• Additional Support Needs – If you require any extra support or adjustments, this is the perfect opportunity to discuss your needs so we can tailor our support to you.

The course is assessed through a portfolio of evidence — no exams required.

• Observation plans and feedback records
• Written assignments and reflective accounts
• Observation reports and judgement statements
• Evaluation of performance and proposed improvements

How It’s Marked:

• Internally assessed by qualified staff
• Portfolio must include two formal observations
• Final assessment is subject to external quality assurance by TQUK
