TQUK Level 1 Award in Principles of Working in Early Years Settings

The TQUK Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools introduces learners to the key principles of working in an educational environment. It covers child development, safeguarding, communication, and school policies, providing an excellent foundation for those new to the sector.

This qualification is suitable for school volunteers, aspiring teaching assistants, or those considering a future in education.

• Assessment is portfolio-based and includes written assignments and practical tasks.
• No formal exams – learners complete coursework to demonstrate their understanding.
• Upon successful completion, learners will receive the TQUK Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools, a nationally recognised qualification.

• Volunteers interested in working in primary or secondary school settings

• No formal qualifications are required.
• Learners must be at least 16 years old.
• A basic understanding of English is beneficial for written tasks.

The course covers essential topics, including:

• Introduction to Schools as Workplaces – Learn about different school types, structures, and the roles of teaching and support staff.
• Child Development Basics – Understand how children learn and develop across different age groups.
• Safeguarding and Child Protection – Gain essential knowledge on safeguarding policies, responsibilities, and child protection procedures.
• Health & Safety in Schools – Learn the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for students and staff.
• Effective Communication in Education – Develop communication skills for working with children, parents, and school staff.
• The Role of School Support Staff – Understand how teaching assistants, administrative staff, and other roles contribute to a successful learning environment.

While this is an introductory qualification, it can lead to entry-level roles such as:

• School Volunteer
• Classroom Assistant (with further training)
•  Learning Support Assistant (with progression to Level 2)

After completing this course, learners can progress to:

• TQUK Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)
• Advanced apprenticeships in childcare and early years education
• Employment as an Early Years Practitioner in nurseries, preschools, or childminding settings

As part of your course, you will receive a 1-2-1 induction session with your tutor via Microsoft Teams. This session is designed to help you get started, set clear goals, and ensure you have the right support in place for a successful learning experience. 

What to Expect in Your Induction Session: 

• Individual Learning Plan (ILP) Creation – Your tutor will work with you to develop a personalised learning plan, outlining key milestones and ensuring your studies align with your goals.
• Target Setting – Together, you’ll set realistic and achievable targets to help you stay on track and motivated throughout your course. 
• Additional Support Needs – If you require any extra support or adjustments, this is the perfect opportunity to discuss your needs so we can tailor our support to you.

All assessments for your course are set and marked internally to ensure a high standard of learning and feedback. Simply submit your work to your dedicated course tutor, who will carefully review your assessments and provide constructive feedback to support your progress.

Once you have successfully completed all required assessments, your work will go through our Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) process. This ensures that marking is consistent, fair, and meets the required standards. During this process:

Your assessments may be moderated by an internal quality assurer to verify accuracy and consistency.

This additional review helps maintain the integrity and credibility of your qualification.

If any further amendments are needed, you’ll be provided with clear guidance on what to improve.

Once your work has passed through the IQA process and meets all necessary standards, your certification will be issued, officially confirming your successful course completion.
